spectrum can provide the following benefits:

• Reduces fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and

   mouth
• Improves skin tone
• Heals blemishes
• Increases blood circulation to the skin
• Regenerates and stimulates fibroblast cells which creates

Research has shown that certain skin cells when engaged by a process of applied red light waves at precisely 633 nanometers can be encouraged to produce enzymes, elastin, and collagen that support the skin’s structure. Red light at 633nm is absorbed by the mitochondria of cells and stimulates intracellular energy transfer (ATP) for enhanced cell vitality and permeability, increased turnover of collagen and elastin fibers, production of new collagen, and improved oxygenation.

Improved oxygenation and detoxification of the skin is achieved by the Light Sources Rejuvenessence “Collagen Plus” lamps as the vascular walls of the skin’s small blood vessels are strengthened, followed by improved natural repair and creation of healthy skin.

The initial effect is clearer, brighter, and tighter feeling skin. The long-term effect is improved skin clarity, tone, and texture. Fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark circles as well as puffiness around the eyes are reduced, while the effects of environmental damage and chronological aging are minimized.

Over time Light Sources “Collagen Plus” red light therapy will help restore tired-looking skin, decrease fine lines and wrinkles, diminish freckles, age spots, and acne, even out pigmentation, minimize the size of facial pores, improve the appearance of sun-weathered skin, and stimulate collagen synthesis, improving the skin’s supportive structure.

The “Collagen Plus” red light phototherapy program recommends 3 to 4 sessions a week for 60 to 90 days, followed thereafter by 1 to 2 sessions a week. Best results are gotten by continuous use, which accelerates cellular activity and fuels the process of collagen and elastin synthesis.

There are no known counter-indications. Protective eyewear is recommended, but not required. Discontinuing the red light therapy typically results in the gradual loss of results over the course of time, as with normal skin aging.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What causes aging?

The aging of our skin is influenced by numerous factors. As a result of internal and external factors, the skin changes constantly from infancy to adulthood. The skin is challenged by specific structural and functional changes, both within the supportive dermis layer and within the epidermis (outer visible layer of skin). The skin’s metabolism and natural functions starts declining from the age of 25 forward. Aging means that our skin cells are unable to replenish themselves properly and over time the skin’s natural protective hydrolipid film is weakened. This results in dry complexion, wrinkles, sensitive skin and loss of elasticity. After the age of 45, the skin will start to become thinner – making it more vulnerable to damage caused by environmental factors. Red light emitted by collagen lamps stimulate and activate the production of collagen and elastin which are the main proteins that contribute to our skin’s elasticity, texture and tone.

What is collagen?

Collagen belongs to three essential skin proteins, the others being elastin and keratin. Collagen is a fiber substance – when mature, it is a mesh of fibers. It consists of groups of white inelastic fibers with tensile strength. These include fine fibrils, which are made-up of even finer filaments to form a 3-dimensional network. The protein is found in our body’s skin, but also in most of our organs. That’s why there are various types of collagen. In essence, collagen is the fundamental “glue” that holds our bodies together. It supports and connects body tissues of the skin, muscles, tendons, cartilage, bones and event teeth.

Why is the production of collagen in our skin so important? The amount and quality of collagen in our skin contributes to our appearance. Each body is unique and has a specific collagen composition depending on age and health. The productivity of our skin’s collagen proteins declines as we age. Natural collagen decrease is often accelerated with poor health choices, such as smoking and drinking. As collagen declines, our skin thins and weakens, resulting in the appearance of wrinkles. The thinning skin starts to lose its protective functions, which will leave it increasingly vulnerable to visible color and texture irregularity or bacterial infection.

Does red light therapy hurt? Are there any adverse effects or interactions?

Red light phototherapy has no reported side effects. This does not mean, however, that it can be used indiscriminately with other products that may themselves cause side effects. A physician should be consulted if light sensitive medication is prescribed. Unlike invasive anti-aging procedures such as microdermabrasion, injections, Botox, chemical peels or laser resurfacing there are no known risks. An anti-aging treatment with collagen lamps is absolutely pain-free. There is no downtime and the therapy is regarded as non-invasive. Some clients may experience brief warmth or "glow" following treatment.

Are there any precautions needed when using red light therapy?

LightSources and LightTech highly recommend consulting with your cosmetic expert or directly contacting the manufacturer of your light therapy device. Each unit is unique depending on the number, wattage and density of lamps in the system. Us and many of our partners recommend the following:

· People who are photo-allergic or take medication that may cause light sensitivity (photo-sensitivity) should not have exposure to red light

· Avoid if you suffer from porphyria (one symptom of pophyria is light sensitivity)

· Avoid if you suffer from epilepsy

· Don’t use if taking cortisone or steroid injections

Use goggles – light won’t harm eyes but may be perceived as very bright

What are drugs that may cause light sensitivity?

Drugs that may cause a light sensitive reaction include, for example:

· Certain antibiotics

· Certain anti-malarial drugs

· Tetracycline

Digoxin (used for heart irregularities/heart failures) and photosensitizing drugs that cause cataracts (e.g., tranquilizers, birth control pills, sulfa drugs, oral anti-diabetic drugs, antidepressants or NSAIDS [aspirin/ibuprofen/advil/meclofen] and steroids)

Please consult with your doctor before using collagen fluorescent light therapy if you take any of these medications.

Does red light therapy produce the same light as from the sun? Is there UV exposure?

Too much sunlight can affect the skin due to the emission of broad spectrum ultraviolet energy through the atmosphere. Collagen Lamps utilize the visible spectra in between 600nm and 700nm, but contain no UVA or UVB rays.

How do I have to prepare my skin before the treatment?

Prior to the treatment, the skin in your facial and décolleté area should be thoroughly washed and cleansed. We recommend using a mild cleansing soap as it improves the transmission of the radiation into the skin. In this way it will not be blocked by dirt or greasy particles which can reflect the radiation. Of course, the skin care market also offers highly effective light therapy ‘enhancers’. There are certain ingredients used in lotions or creams that have been found to intensify the light therapy effect.

How can I enhance the results of anti-aging red light therapy?

It was tested and proven that the use of anti-oxidant vitamin creams with photo rejuvenation treatment give better light therapy effects than using either alone. Anti-oxidant creams (vitamins A, E, C, K and Alpha-Lipoic Acid) may be used after cleaning the skin either before or after a collagen light therapy. Further, the pre-use of hyaluronic acid, acetyl hexapeptide-3 (argireline), ellagic acid and aloe creams may also enhance the desired anti-aging effect. For instance:

· Argireline is a synthetic anti-aging ingredient derived from natural proteins used as a topical alternative treatment to Botox.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs in the body’s connective tissue. It provides lubrication as well as cushioning between the cells and was proven to be beneficial on the tone and texture of a healthy and hydrated looking skin.

In addition, a university in Germany also found that green tea and red light are a powerful duo in skin rejuvenation. The combination can accelerate the rejuvenation effect due to the coordinated interplay of the biological and physicochemical effects of the light source with the ROS (reactive oxygen species) scavenging capacity of green tea, which extends the action spectrum of phototherapy.
